My First Youtube Video

Every summer I make a list of things to accomplish. And every summer most of those thing never get done. So over the years I've learned to put down realistic goals. Along with "read Moby Dick" (lol) and "practice my clarinet" (lol x2) I wrote down "upload first YouTube video". And I can tell you straight up that the first two things on that list were never done.

You never really appreciate something until you actually try it yourself. I applaud the youtubers who promise (and deliver) great videos every week. I mean how do they even come up with material?! Not to mention editing and malfunctioning cameras. It took me one week of planning, a day of filming, another week of editing, and yet another week of arguing with my self-esteem.

The means of creating a YouTube video do not arrive to me until this past year. My parents had a ton of mileage stocked up on their card- enough to buy a Canon EOS Rebel Ti3, free of charge. Naturally this takes phenomenon pictures, however I had trouble with recording videos. I know, I know that this is a camera, not a video camera. But the picture quality is good. The only problem is that it records only five to ten seconds of video. So I searched Google for a cure. Yahoo Answers as well as a few other sites pointed fingers at my SD card, saying that a Rebel Ti3 needs a class 10 SD card. Okay, fine. Problem #1 fixed with a trip to Best Buy.

Then Problem#2 arose. Editing Software. I don't have a Mac or Photoshop. Nor do I have the means of purchasing either one. So I got my brother to obtain Sony Vegas Pro for me. And, may God bless his tech geek soul, he did. To the extent of my knowledge, for us lowly Windows users, Sony Vegas is the best video editing software. It takes a while to figure out but watching you tube tutorials and Google can help with that.

A Screen Shot of My Editing Process

With a good playlist and plenty of time, editing can be pretty fun. It's almost like editing a piece of writing. Fix a transition here, move a part there. Of course just like editing papers, after awhile it gets tiring seeing the same thing over and over again.

Once completed, I felt awkward and insecure. I hate the sound of my voice. Good music and words on the screen fixed that but then all the other insecurities crept in. What if it gets too many dislikes? What if people hate it? And then after a week of that nonsense I said f**** it. Who cares?

I'm not expecting many views or even any comments, that's not why I created the video. Just as with this blog, I'm happy I did it. Words can not express the amount of happiness I felt when I finally hit the upload button T.T
